By Photobox on 2 February 2026

Confused by paper weights? Not sure if you want flat or folded? We’re here to help you create custom cards that look like you hired a pro (even if you made them on the sofa in less than 10 minutes).

A selection of personalised cards on a shelf, featuring two baby announcements and a personalised wedding card, showing how easy it is to create your own card with Photobox.

Why settle for a generic card when you have a camera roll full of a-mazing photos just waiting to be used? We have personalised cards for practically every occasion. You might be planning the big day and need save the date cards and wedding invitations that match your colour scheme perfectly. Maybe you’re introducing a new arrival with baby announcements (guaranteed to make the grandparents cry happy tears), or just sending a miss you card to a friend who lives too far away.

From birthday party invitations to a custom thank you card, adding your own snaps guarantees your card earns a permanent spot on the fridge (rather than a one-way trip to the recycling bin). And the best bit? You don’t need to be a designer to get professional results. Here’s our full guide to our different card sizes, folds and finishes, so you know exactly which one to pick.

Choosing your card type

Picking your personalised card size and format

Before you start scrolling through your fave photos, you need to decide on the format and size. We have four main options, and yes – they all come in packs of 10 with crisp white envelopes included, so no panic-dashing to the shops last minute (we’ve all been there).

  • Square Folded Cards (10 x 10 cm or 15 x 15 cm): The one with the space. This is for when you have more to say than just ‘love from us’. You can splash a big photo on the front and still have loads of room inside to write a proper essay (or a really heartfelt message). Because they stand up on their own, these are the winners for Christmas cards, new year cards or a personal thank you card.
  • Square Flat Cards (10 x 10 cm or 15 x 15 cm): The cool and modern choice (and perfect for your Instagram crops). These are two-sided, a bit like a premium postcard. We love these for birth announcements – where the face is the only thing that matters – or a stylish new home card to show off the new front door.
  • Rectangle Folded Cards (10 x 15 cm or 13 x 19 cm): The classic ‘mantelpiece’ shape. Available in portrait or landscape, this is the traditional greeting card format you know and love. You get four sides to customise, making them ideal for big milestone moments like communion cards, anniversaries or birthday invitations where you need space for all the details inside.
  • Rectangle Flat Cards (10 x 15 cm or 13 x 19cm): The fridge magnet’s best friend. It feels traditional (in a good way), giving you that familiar portrait or landscape look in a flat style. It’s a go-to choice for wedding invitation cards and save the date invitations, or a kids’ party invitation that parents can pin up so they don’t forget the date.

Paper finishes for your custom cards

The paper you choose for your card design can change the whole vibe. We have three finishes to choose from, and they all do a slightly different job depending on the photo you’ve picked.

  • Matte: The reliable all-rounder. This 240gsm card is smooth to the touch without being shiny. Because it doesn’t have any glare, it gives your photos a really soft and elegant look – making it a lovely choice for holy communion cards or a sweet thank you card for a teacher.
  • Gloss: The shiny one. We add a coating to the 240gsm card to give it that classic photo shine. It makes the colours really pop, so if you are designing birthday party invitations or bright party invitations for the kids, this finish definitely brings the energy.
  • Extra matte: The ‘ooh, that’s fancy’ one. This is a thicker 300gsm card that we leave uncoated. It has a real texture to it and feels premium in your hand, which is why it works so well for stylish wedding invitations or those keepsake baby cards you know are going straight into the memory box.

Our themed cards for all occasions

We weren’t joking when we said we had a card for everything. Whether you are throwing the party of the century or just trying to be polite after receiving 20 pairs of baby socks, we’ve got a card design that fits.

  • Christmas: The main event. Whether you’ve managed to wrangle the kids into matching pyjamas or just put a Santa hat on the dog, our personalised Christmas cards are the best way to spread some festive cheer (and look very organised while doing it).
  • Baby announcements: Welcome to the bubble. You have thousands of photos of the new arrival, so you might as well put them to work. Birth announcements are the cutest way to introduce your little one to the world, while our baby thank you cards are a lifesaver for acknowledging all those gifts when you’re (way, way) too tired to write a long letter.
  • New Year cards: Missed the last post for Christmas? Don’t panic. New Year cards are the procrastinator’s best friend. They send the exact same message (‘we love you, hope you’re well’) but buy you an extra week of time. We won’t tell if you don’t.
  • Thank you cards: Sometimes a text just doesn’t cut it. Sending a personalised thank you card – especially one with a photo from the event – is the classiest way to wrap up a wedding, a birthday or just to let someone know you really appreciated their gift. A small gesture that scores big points is always a winner in our eyes.
  • Communion cards: It’s a special milestone for the whole family, so it deserves stationery to match. Whether you are sending out holy communion invitations for the service or sharing a proud photo of them in their best dress or suit afterwards, our communion cards make a lovely keepsake for the grandparents.
  • Invitations: A proper invite AKA the official party starter – and we have card designs for every bash in the diary. From engagement drinks to birthday party invitations for any age (yes, even the big ones).
  • Wedding cards: The prettiest bit of life admin you’ll ever do. We can help you sort the whole wedding suite – save the date cards to stake your claim on the calendar, official wedding invitations for the big day and matching thank you cards to send out once the honeymoon blues set in. Dreamy.

Get creative with photo card printing

Once you’ve picked your platform, you’ve got two ways to get started:

  1. Our themed cards – the ‘I need this done ASAP’ route: We’ve got hundreds of pre-made designs for everything from photo Christmas cards to change of address cards. Simply add your photos, tweak the details and take all the credit. You’re welcome.
  2. Create from scratch – the ‘I’m feeling creative’ route: Got a specific vision for your greetings cards? Start with a blank design and go wild with our customisation features like backgrounds, frames, stickers and fonts (more on these below).

How to make your custom cards extra unique

Whether you are building from scratch or just want to add a personal touch to a pre-designed template, here are the tools to look out for in the editor:

  • Backgrounds: A soft pastel wash to match the baby’s nursery? Check. A bold of colour to scream ‘party time’? We’re here for that too. Swapping out the background is the quickest way to change the whole vibe of your card.
  • Stickers: We’ve got sticker styles for any occasion (literally) – festive, celebrations, astrology, wedding, pets – you name it. Our stickers are a great choice to add personality to the occasion and make the card feel 100% you.
  • Frames: Give your snaps a classic look with a simple border, or get experimental with something more design-led to really make your photo stand out on the page.
  • Masks: Who said photos have to be square? Use a mask to instantly crop your picture into a circle, a heart or even a star. It looks fancy and technical, but it takes literally one click.

Printed on quality paper

We know you want your cards to look good, but it’s nice to know they do good too. All our photo cards are printed on 100% recyclable, plastic-free and FSC-certified paper. In non-jargon terms? That means the wood comes from forests that are responsibly managed. So you can send your personalised cards completely guilt-free.

You’ve got the tips, now it’s over to you. Creating a personalised card is your chance to skip the generic shop-bought packs and make something completely perfect for your occasion. Whether you are planning the party of the year or just sending a little hello, you’re officially ready to start designing.
