How to make the perfect wedding announcement

Wording your wedding announcement (just like creating a wedding invitation) can be a tricky thing. Ideally, it’ll be a great representation of your special day, all wrapped up in a well-timed, super beautiful package. Sounds great, right? We’ll show you how to write a wedding announcement, giving you some handy pointers as well as a few top tier examples along the way!

Why should I write a wedding announcement?

The modus operandi of the humble wedding announcement is pretty simple: to let people who weren’t able to attend your wedding know that you’ve got married. If you’re planning on a small wedding, an elopement or a destination wedding, they’re a great way of keeping those who weren’t able to attend in the loop.

They’re also really useful if you’ve got professional connections, particularly when the bride has had to change her name.

Where should I publish my wedding announcement?

There are loads of different places that you can publish your wedding announcement. From local newspapers to simply sending it out to your friends and family, the way you deliver your wedding announcement says something about who you are. One of the easiest – and most modern – ways to deliver your wedding announcement is simply to send it out over your social media channel of choice, whether that’s a perfectly poised Instagram photo or a good old Facebook update.

If you’re going to announce your wedding in a newspaper, it’s best to make it one near where you and your partner live, that way, it’ll actually do the job it was intended for! It doesn’t matter whether you’re old-school or too cool for school, there’s sure to be a venue for your wedding announcement that suits you down to the ground.

When should I publish it?

When it comes to wedding announcements, timing is everything. You should try to release your announcement the day after your wedding, but within a month of the ceremony is completely acceptable, after all, you’ll probably have your hands full! Whenever you choose to make your wedding announcement, be sure to plan ahead.

If you’d like to use one of your wedding photos in the announcement, it might be a good idea to let your photographer know beforehand. As we all know, it can be a while before wedding photographs get delivered, and you don’t want to be left with zero imagery to accompany your text!

What should I include?

So, what should your wedding announcement actually include? It’s really up to you, depending on how much information you want to give to the recipients. Here are a couple of suggestions:

  • Your names, ages and hometowns
  • Your parents’ names and ages
  • Your grandparents’ names and ages
  • Your occupations
  • Your educational history
  • The location and date of your wedding and reception
  • Your honeymoon plans

How should I write my wedding announcement?

There’s lots of different styles that you can use to write your wedding announcement. From concise to bubbly, it really comes down to how you want to express yourself. We’ve written a couple of suggestions for you to take some inspiration from.

  1. Super simple:

We got hitched!

Amy Jones and Simon Smith

were married on

01/08/2017

St Paul’s Cathedral

London, UK.

  1. Traditional:

Amy Jones of Manchester and Simon Smith of Birmingham were married at 9am, August 1, 2017 at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. The groom is the son of Bobby and Rita Smith of Birmingham. He is a 2015 graduate of the University of London. He is an engineer. The bride is the daughter of Mark and Jane Jones of Manchester. She is a 2014 graduate of the University of London. She is an interior designer.

  1. Conversational:

Surprise, surprise, we got married!

The wedding took place on the 1st August, 2017 at St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

Due to our small guest list, there were lots of people who we weren’t able to invite.

We really missed having you there, and hope to see you soon!

Love,

Amy and Simon.

As you can see, there no right way to write a wedding announcement. Just go with your heart!

How do I respond to a wedding announcement?

If you’ve received a wedding announcement, you might be wondering how you’re supposed to respond. Well, outside of feeling happy for the lucky couple, there’s really no need to do anything. If you do feel like sending over a belated wedding gift (though there’s no obligation to do so) there are plenty of unique wedding presents that you can choose from, from canvas prints to personalised snow globes!

So, in the end, you just need to choose the type of wedding announcement that suits you best!
