Ideas and inspiration, news and reviews, pictures and points of view – it's all right here in FOTB

Featured photographer: James Cant

James Cant started his career snapping editorial features for titles such as Esquire and She, as well as several of the weeklies. These days he works mainly in advertising and design, with agencies ranging from M&C Saatchi, Leo Burnett, Publicis and a selection of design groups. His clients come from a wide variety of sectors including entertainment, banking, retail, medical, charities, motor etc, so there's plenty of scope for creativity.

"Photographing people always brings an element of the unknown"

James says, 'I love photographing people of all ages, both professional models and what tends to be referred to, bizarrely enough, as 'real people'. The challenge with some professional models is to stop them modeling. Photographing people always brings an element of the unknown, so while any shoot will have certain outcomes that will have to be achieved, the subject will bring something of themselves that adds other elements to the final image.'

When working he says, 'I try to direct with a light touch, and it's hugely satisfying when all the elements come together and a good shot turns into a great shot. This approach works well with children as they tend to give a less mitigated response to being photographed and the charm of an image often lies in the energy, enthusiasm or openness of the child.'

Working as a professional photographer requires a multitude of skills, as with running any small business. James believes the secret of success though is to, 'Keep a focus on the creative side, stay engaged and enthused with what you're doing, and remain resilient and determined.'

Photography tips

1. Spark your creativity

Give yourself a fun theme and see what interesting shots you can come up based only on this theme.

2. Exhibition time

Become a regular at photography exhibitions, it's a brilliant way to get inspired and give you ideas for your own images.

3. Avoiding flare

With digital SLR cameras it's well worth investing in a lens hood to both protect your lens and help avoid unwanted flare in bright sunshine.
