When working he says, 'I try to direct with a light touch, and it's hugely satisfying when all the elements come together and a good shot turns into a great shot. This approach works well with children as they tend to give a less mitigated response to being photographed and the charm of an image often lies in the energy, enthusiasm or openness of the child.'

Working as a professional photographer requires a multitude of skills, as with running any small business. James believes the secret of success though is to, 'Keep a focus on the creative side, stay engaged and enthused with what you're doing, and remain resilient and determined.'

Frozen In Time

Frozen In Time: The Mountain Photography of Vittorio Sella, can be seen at London's Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art. It's a very apt title, as 100 years on these images remain timeless. They're breathtaking to see, and must have been breathtaking for Vittorio, pushing his mountaineering and photographic skills to the limit as he trekked up 17,000 feet with heavy photographic equipment to get just the right angle and the right light. Tickets £3.50, exhibition ends 14th September.

Fashion photography fans and style gurus alike will be intrigued by Fashion in the Mirror: Self-reflection in Fashion Photography, on at The Photographers' Gallery. The images challenge the glamour of the fashion industry, with a revealing look behind the scenes from a series of legendary photographers including: Mario Testino, Juergen Teller, Helmut Newton, Norman Parkinson and Nick Knight.

Beside the seaside

Get into the true spirit of summer at the National Media Museum in Bradford. Their current exhibition, Sunny Snaps: Street and Beach Photography in Britain, takes an enjoyable stroll back through generations of family seaside trips celebrating the snapshots of the seaside photographer.

As well as being one of Britain's leading photographers, Lord Snowdon is also a Patron of the Dimbola Lodge photography museum on the Isle of Wight. Right now there's an exhibition dedicated to his work entitled simply, Lord Snowdon: A Personal Collection. The show consists of an inspiring collection of portraits of artists, writers, actors and designers. Exhibition ends 19th October.
